“As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation -- either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

We all experience pain. Everyone experiences it in different ways and in different circumstances, but it's a big part of life for everyone. We hate it because deep down inside we know something's wrong - that the world wasn't supposed to be this way, yet it is and there seems to be little we can do about it.

In many ways, pain creates division. It divides what should be from what is, it separates us from the ones who hurt us, and sometimes it pushes away those who want to help.

The funny thing is, pain also can be a platform for unity. Often the people closest to us are the ones who have been there with us through our painful experiences. But the pain itself doesn't bring unity - it's our response to it. Pain opens up a space for another thing we all have the capacity for: love.

Love has the power to bring us together. Through love, the very thing that should have split us apart becomes a powerful force of unity.

So when you do find yourself in pain, you have a choice: you can let it become a source of division, or you can use it to open a door to unity through love.
