"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" - Winston Churchill
As we go through life, it's easy to become obsessed with what we get. As Churchill notes, we have to "get" to be able to live at all. But if we get so caught up in trying to "get" things, we forget all too quickly how much we have to give.
In a world where we have to face the problem of scarcity, giving doesn't really look like a great idea. We're usually only comfortable giving once we're sure we have enough for ourselves. But sometimes, there can be more power in giving than there ever could be in getting. It's such a different experience because it forces us to shift from caring about ourselves (our default state) to caring about someone else. Sometimes we just need to stop trying to be the center of the universe, so we can come alongside all the other people going around the world.
Of course, there is a time for giving and a time for receiving. We need both - but the world around us keeps advertising to us a disproportionate amount of getting to giving, so it's especially important that we don't let the power of giving slip away from us.
